What is your existing HDD? SATA? PATA?

If the latter, then it is better if you upgrade it as well. Gawin mo nalang second drive yung older HDD mo...

Drivers lang ang nakikita kong problema.

you can get an ancient IDE hard drive, reformat it, lagyan mo ng IDE to sata converter then use it as the only/boot drive of a new high end PC (core i7, SLI geforce 590, 8 gigs ddr3, etc)

however, loading programs and windows boot would be very slow. To get an idea, try benchmarking some disk based operations like copying a large file from one subdirectory to another or windows boot in safe mode compared to normal

then back up the files, reformat, copy the files back. Or even better, use the old HD as a secondary drive

if you mean programs, then just reinstall them. If you already lost the installers, then karma yan kasi tamad ka mag backup ng installer files

*hands raised down to tajinury* :D

If you'll ask me, I guess it's better to build a newer rig.
Price difference between upgrading an building a new unit won't be too far. Just like pcruztemp's friendly advice, there would be a hindrances or bottlenecks on the unit.
Also, you can backup your data from your old HDD to the new one. So I don't see any problems doing a clean install of any OS onto the drives.
